Cisco Catalyst 2960
Network Equipment > Catalyst Switch > 2960

Following the software companies' (Microsoft and IBM) thrust on the small to medium-sized enterprise environments, Cisco is also vewing big sales opportunities in this area. With a vision of providing medium-sized businesses with large-scale enterprise capabilities, Cisco has released a series of switches for exactly this purpose in September 2005.

Composed of 5 sets of switches, the 2960 Catalyst Series is specifically made to augment the speed and functionality of the LAN services used by entry-level enterprises, mid-market networks, and branch office networks.

Since these are independent devices with enhanced Ethernet connectivity (Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet ports), the speed and bandwidth provided by Gigabit Ethernet will no doubt enhance existing network performance while meeting the evolving network demands of growing enterprises. Going at a 1000 Mbps-clip, network users will be able to run multiple concurrent applications with improved efficiency as well as fewer threats to the network.

So if your business needs involve common functions such as audio and video conference, real-time database query, video broadcast, and file sending, these can all run at the same time on the 2960 Catalyst Series, while having a multi-gigabyte backup and virus protection system waiting in the wings. This makes a lot of sense if your medium-size business relies on being able to have these functions (and other functions of similar complexity and network demand) run concurrently on a consistent basis. It should also be noted that the Gigabit Ethernet port has dual-purpose uplinks (copper or fiber uplink).

Integrated and enhanced security is another sweet spot in the 2960 Catalyst Series. Although most network infrastructures already have their own authentication and data encryption facilities, the 2960 Series offers the latest technologies from Cisco to uphold privacy, protect important business information, and keep unauthorized users out of the network.

Network Admission Control (NAC), Identity Based Networking Services (IBNS), MAC Address Notification, and sophisticated Access Control Lists (ACLs) are only some of the intelligent features under the security module of the 2960 Series.

The Catalyst 2960 Series' multi-layer Quality of Service (QoS) and Granular Rate Limiting features should not be left unnoticed since these advancements help in bandwidth optimization and network traffic control, preventing congestion in the network as much as possible.

Produced as a complement to the 2950 Catalyst Series, this latest Cisco invention gives an edge to existing users of the company's products. Since its hardware and inter-network operating system are also consistent with higher-end Catalyst switches, the 2960 Catalyst product line will be flexible to Cisco's updates and upgrades. With the company planning to advance in technologies such as multimedia communications (e.g. Video IP), telephony (e.g. IP Phone), and network management & monitoring, the prospects for the 2960 Series could only get brighter.

Expect this product to be packaged by vendors with software and devices for advanced network applications such as wireless LANs and IP telephony.
